My Shealoe
I broke out my double boiler recently to soften some shea butter. My plan was to soften it, mix it with aloe vera gel ( Lily of the Desert Inner Fillet to be exact) and whip it.
Here are my proportions and ingredients:
2 tbsp of raw shea butter
1/4 cup of aloe vera gel
1 tsp jojoba oil
The shea butter melted very quickly, so instead of softened shea I ended up with melted shea. (Maybe I was too busy taking pictures!) All was not lost. I mixed the aloe vera gel and jojoba with the liquid shea and poured it into an 8oz jar. I placed it in the freezer for about two hours to help it solidify.
After I removed it from the freezer, I scooped the butter mix into a large bowl and whipped it with a hand mixer. I whipped the butter until it got a light fluffy(ish) texture. After whipping, I spooned it back into the jar and it was ready for use.
I sealed my hair from root to tip with my shealoe after washing and deep conditioning. It smooths into my hair much easier then regular shea. I really like the way it left my hair moisturized and manageable after air drying. This is a keeper. It should work especially well to seal in my moisture during these winter months.
*Update*
Refrigerate for freshness. This mix will grow mold otherwise. For future mixes, I will be adding grapefruit seed extract or rosemary essential oil for antifungal and antimicrobial benefits.
Hi Regina,
Is there a special reason why you need to add jojoba oil or any oil to the butter or are you just following instructions.
Thx
Hey Kadiane,
No special reason. The recipes I saw added coconut oil. Since I’m not really big on coconut oil, I decided to add jojoba. I think whatever you would like to add is fine. It’s just a preference.
Hi Gina,
This is Chantel from the gym. I like your site, very creative and great info. I have tried your Shealoe recipe on Saturday. I used it on my twists. I will test it out for a while to determine if its a keeper. Thanks!
Thanks Chantel! Let me know how the shealoe works for you. :)
I did my shealoe last week with diffrent proprotions ( twice as much aloe than shea butter and some coconut olive oil with tee trea to avoid mold). My probem is it still have to keep it in the frigde cuz the water from aloe is separating from the rest. Now when in the fridge, it is kind of too hard to use. Do you have the same problem?
Interesting. I didn’t think you would still have to refrigerate it with the essential oil. Currently, my shealoe is still in the fridge (no e.o.). I don’t feel like it’s too hard to use. I take it out the fridge a few minutes before use, rub it between my hands to soften it and then apply to my hair and it seems just fine. It’s not as soft as it was when it was not refrigerated but I don’t find it too hard to use. It retains a little bit of the lighter texture from the whipping. You doubled the aloe so that’s where your separating problem is coming from. My shealoe isn’t separating.
Tx for replying. Did you use the regular aloe vera gel that people drink or did you use the one that looks like hair gel ( made of about 95% aloe vera plus some thickening agents
Your welcome. I used Lily of the Desert Aloe Vera Gel. It’s a dietary supplement.
I made some shealoe yesterday with 4oz shea 1oz castor oil 1oz trader joes aloe vera gel and a little burnt sugar pomade for the smell. My hair loves anything shea and I am so happy I can create my own moisturizers instead of buying it online.
Love your blog btw.
I never thought of adding Burnt Sugar Pomade to the Shealoe. That’s a great idea because I love the smell of it! I also love to make simple products like moisturizers and shampoo. It’s so much more economical.
Thank you so much :)
