Singer Estelle is set to perform in the Big Apple.  I was jammin’ to Estelle‘s “Break My Heart” last summer and right now “Thank You” is my anthem.  I’m so excited to see British songstress Estelle perform.

She will be at Irving Plaza on Tuesday, February 28th.  Unfortunately, tickets have not gone on sale yet. (They should  be $22 when they finally are on sale.)  So if you, like me, really want to see her, stalk the box office at Irving Plaza at 17 Irving Plaza New York, NY 10003, (212) 777-6800 and keep tabs on the Ticketmaster or Live nation sale pages. My birthday was last month and, of course I had to have my hairapy session with hairstylist Nedjetti in time for my festivities.  I got my usual steam treatment, scalp massage, blowout and trim.  But, instead of a twist updo like the ones I’ve gotten in the past, I got an elegant bun updo.  (see photo above.)

On another note….I love desserts.  It would be a crime not to mention my bday cupcakes.  I ordered them from BCake NY bakery in Brooklyn, NYC.  The chocolate Baileys seen below were heavenly.  Delicious, fluffy and flavorful.  I’m not the biggest chocolate lover and these cupcakes were definitely one of my favs.

Had to throw in some red velvet!  All I can say is yumm. :)

We lost music legend Etta James today.  She paved the way for many.  Her music and legacy won’t be forgotten.

Etta James was one of the many musicians I was introduced to by shuffling through my dad’s old record collection.  What a voice!  Earlier, I saw this quote attributed to Etta James online: “The two things you can’t fake are good food and good music.”  I love it!  I can’t pick just one song.  Do you have a favorite Etta James song?

Last week, I had the pleasure of trying out some Ginger + Liz nail polish at an event in Harlem at Carol’s Daughter.  I love the colors in this vegan, non-toxic nail polish line.  You can find neutrals, bright, bold colors and those funky glittery polishes.

The color on my nails above is “Better Off Without You”.  GingerandLiz.com describes it as “a brilliant tangelo shade bright enough to spice up any season yet appropriate for all”.  I adored this shade on my nails and, to top it off, the polish dried very quickly. (That’s something I think we all want in a nail polish.) I’ll definitely be picking up some Ginger + Liz polish in the near future.

I started this style by creating  the bottom roll like I did with the Fence hairstyle.   After, a few unsuccessful attempts at styling the remaining hair, I ending up playing around with it to see how many roll layers I could create.  Since, I had the base roll as the foundation, it wasn’t difficult to set the second layer on top of it.  I used my fingers to section off enough hair for another roll and twisted a small elastic around the remaining small section of hair at the top to keep it out of the way.  Making sure to have a lot of hairpins on hand, I created a roll just like the base roll all the way around.  The top layer was a bit trickier since that section of hair was considerably smaller.  However, after some mangling I was able to smooth it around similar to the other rolls.  It looks more like a bun because of its smaller size.

I didn’t know exactly what I was going to do when I started this style (as is often the case).  I just go with it and play around a bit.  Be flexible when trying any of the styles found on this blog and practice.

Bobbing for Baubles is the first  color I tried from the Essie pack I bought at Macy’s.  Essie.com calls it a “deepest darkest sapphire”.  It reminded me of a dark teal or peacock.  It grew on me the more I wore it as I didn’t like it at first.  I don’t always go for such dark colors unless they’re a wine or chocolate of some sort.  But, in the end, I liked it…just not as much as my Carry On.
